Tata Motors India has updated the range figures for its electric vehicles following the Indian government’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) introduction of additional parameters to the MIDC test cycles.

Previously, the range figures provided by automakers were based solely on the City/Urban driving cycle. However, the Ministry has now mandated that all car manufacturers test and report range figures based on both Urban and Extra-Urban cycles.

This means that the older MIDC cycle evaluated the electric car range under city driving conditions only, whereas the updated MIDC cycle includes both city and highway driving. The latest revision includes an increase in average testing speed from 19 kph to 31 kph, and a rise in maximum speed from 50 kph to 90 kph. These changes aim to better reflect real-world driving conditions.

Additionally, Tata Motors has introduced its range test cycle, called C75, which is designed to approximate real-world driving conditions. Tata claims that this new cycle will provide a range per charge that’s more representative of actual usage compared to the MIDC cycle.

According to Tata, 75 percent of its owners should achieve the specified range. Tata Motors also noted that their EVs are tested at higher average speeds of 40 kph and a top speed of 120 kph.

Moreover, unlike the MIDC cycle, the C75 test includes running the air conditioning, higher loads, and a broader temperature range. In contrast, the MIDC cycle tests with the air conditioning on, a load of 150 kg, and a temperature variance of 20-30°C.

For example, the Tata Curvv EV 55 kWh version now has a MIDC-certified range of 502 km, down from 585 km in the previous MIDC cycle. In Tata’s C75 test, this model is expected to deliver approximately 400-425 km per charge.

Similarly, the Curvv EV 45 kWh version now offers a range of 430 km compared to the previous 502 km, with the C75 test indicating a range of 330-350 km.

The Nexon EV 40.5 kWh and 30 kWh versions now provide ranges of 390 km and 275 km, respectively, under the new MIDC cycle. The Punch EV 35 kWh’s range has decreased to 365 km from 421 km, and the 25 kWh version now offers 265 km compared to the former 315 km. The Tiago EV range has also been reduced to 275 km.

Tata Motors continues to lead in the electric vehicle market with its lineup, including the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, and Curvv EV.
